Thanks to President Biden and Democrats in Congress, Medicare can finally negotiate lower drug prices
Now, big drug companies are suing to stop negotiations and protect their massive profits
What is the Medicare price negotiation program?
In 2022, Democrats won a decades-long battle against Big Drug Companies to finally allow Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices. The new program created by the Inflation Reduction Act will lower costs for some of the highest-priced prescription drugs on the market used to treat conditions like cancer, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders – conditions that disproportionately impact women, communities of color, and people in rural areas.
In August of 2023, the Biden administration announced the first ten prescription drugs eligible for Medicare negotiation. Those negotiations will culminate in the publication of maximum fair prices for those drugs on September 1, 2024. Those prices will take effect in 2026, adding another 15 drugs in 2027 and 2028, and another 20 in 2029 and subsequent years.
The first 10 drugs selected for negotiation:
Eliquis for blood clots Enbrel for arthritis and psoriasis Entresto for heart failure Farxiga for diabetes Fiasp/NovoLog for diabetes
